Termon House in Donegal, Ireland
Termon House in Donegal, Ireland

Termon House, Maghery

In the heart of the Gaeltacht, this 18th-century land agent’s house sits proudly by the sea. Inside, the blue-and-white kitchen and simple bedrooms speak of comfort and shelter. Its history is less benevolent: the land agent who lived here during the famine years was notoriously ruthless. The surrounding landscape remains a draw, however. Glenveagh national park is close by and there’s Bundoran surf school just down the coast.

Gatsby House, Ardara

Gatsby House

Glamorous and striking, this 19th-century townhouse is an unexpected find in sleepy Ardara. With Ralph Lauren furniture, Designers Guild fabrics and Vera Wang china, this isn’t a house for wallflowers. The Ava Gardner bedroom has fuchsia and plum velvet drapes, shimmering wallpaper, a vast bed, real fire and floor-to-ceiling windows. Or go for the smaller and more subtle Lauren Bacall. While the house is designed with cocktails and canapés in mind, Ardara is also home to a walking festival each March.

Cavanagh’s Cottage, Tremore Gleneely

Cavanagh's Cottage

A restored, single-storey cottage with wood and slate floors, white-tiled bathroom and vintage furniture, Cavanagh’s is surrounded by farmland and close to spectacular beaches. There’s a turf store on site (help yourself for the fire), French windows opening on to a terrace and it’s all geared up for families, with custom-built bunk beds, a high chair and cot, board games and a large, well-equipped kitchen.

Croaghacullion, near Glencolumbkille

Croaghacullion, nr Glencolumbkille

A comfortable base for exploring Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, this small, whitewashed cottage is secluded and peaceful, with wonderful, windswept beaches within walking distance but also fairly reliable Wi-Fi. Inside is cosy, with colourfully painted wood, checked blankets and an old grandfather clock.

Gleann Leithin Cottage, Fintown

Small doesn’t have to mean scrimping on style. This tiny cottage has an open-plan kitchen and living area with a woodburning stove, and a bathroom on the ground floor. Above is a mezzanine sleeping area. The space is light and bright, with white walls and colourful vintage finds, and there’s a pretty garden behind the house. For pampering, the owner recommends a seaweed bath (€25pp) at nearby Maghery Bay Salon.
No phone, Sleeps 2, from £197 a week
No children
