Being a small island, Mat Rong has a shape resembling an octopus with long tentacles that twist and turn and a big head. In the middle of the island, there is a lake, round like an eyeball, looking like an octopus head. Due to its position in Halong Bay (which means Descending Dragon in Vietnamese), the island is named Mat Rong.

Entirely unspoiled, this 30-ha wide island has no signal of tourism, so all the traveling, entertainment and accommodation services do not exist. From traveling, eating, recreation services to discovering activities, travelers have to plan on their own.

You can spend the day bathing and exploring the island, and later return to the mainland instead of camping overnight on Mat Rong as you can find no fresh water, tourist services nor even cellphone signal on the island. Pitching a small tent on the beach to rest is not a bad idea.
