Would you eat a squirrel burger? - Halong Junk Cruises

Would you eat a squirrel burger?

Only last week, the Guardian Food Blog was asking “What next for the burger?” after Burger King announced its unappetitsing-looking black burger in Japan. Squirrel, that’s what, at least according to a festival in the Forest of Dean. Forget lamb, game and ostrich, the Forest Showcase Food and Drink Festival will be inviting visitors to create their own “forest flavoured” burger using the meat from the cute, fluffy-tailed creatures, or vermin, depending on your take.

The Forestry Commission kills squirrels every day, so, say the organisers of the event, it makes sense to make use of the “tasty meat … which is similar to rabbit.”

It’s unlikely to appear on the menus of posh burgers chains like MeatLiquor, Honest Burger, Five Guys or Byron, so if you too are bored by beef patties, hot foot it to the festival on 5 October where alongside the usual array of artisan cheese, locally-brewed beer and homemade cakes, you’ll find this alternative take on the burger.

Would you eat a squirrel burger? Or is this a step too far in the burger craze?
